There’s always been a debate about how much brain chemistry/wiring and environmental factors figure into a person developing trich. I just recently found this article from a couple of years ago (it’s also over in the links section) that talks about it as a possible gene mutation. Is it strange that if that is true, it actually makes me kind of happy?
It may be strange, but it means that there is a “reason.” It didn’t strike me randomly, just because. It wasn’t from suppressing anger too much, or being too depressed, or because I was meant to be ugly. Whatever.
Just like any other genetic issues, it won’t mean a quick fix. But it means that 1. people are actually doing some good research and 2. there’s something for them to focus treatments on. Right now we just get talk therapy and anti depresants For the most part, those don’t work. And if they do, they only work for a while and then the pulling comes back. So yes, I’m excited if I have a gene mutation. Because if they end up with a drug trial to fix it, then I’ll volunteer. And if they figure out a way to make sure my kids don’t have that mutation (not likely, so maybe my great grand kids) then that will make me very happy too!
